Time to Place Your Bets

December 22, 2011

Have you ever felt like you were the only person in the world who has certain worries and fears? Have you ever felt that you were destined to be the person who is almost always on the losing side? Have you ever felt that no matter what you do it will be the wrong move? Well, ’ve got good news for you. You are not alone! Just between you and me, there are people who cannot believe me when I talk about my reaction to the world in general and my life in particular. I have some friends who have known me a little better than the general public. They still say, “Oh, that’s Bob Grant. He can’t be feeling down in the dumps. He’s famous.” Whether a person is famous or not is really an opinion. And it really counts for very little, if anything at all. At the end of the day, a normal person gets into bed and in all likelihood is tired enough to want to go to sleep. Ah . . . sleep — that restorative condition of the body and mind — that escape from whatever it is that may be troubling to a mortal soul. But, there really is no escape. There is that part of the brain that never really sleeps. There is that part of the brain that takes over and provides you with a series of scenes that seem to make no sense. . . a series of scenes that are supposed to send us messages which will enlighten our conscious mind as to what really is concerning us. But, none of us is trained in psychiatry so even that will not help us.

I have come to the conclusion that the only way to live is to let go and get out of our own way. Only by truly living one day at a time can we find serenity. This is not to say that what I have just written is the answer to all of your problems, but no one really has the answer to all his own problems because he is the problem. We all are the problem. It is our inability to accept that which we cannot change. I cannot change the fact that the average American voter is a dolt. I cannot change the fact that Barack Obama is a better actor than any of those clumsy, well-meaning people who want to take his job. But, if you want to make a financial killing, then perhaps you had better join me soon to place a wager at a Las Vegas Casino. That wager says, like it or not and I don’t like it, Barack Obama wins a second term. I can’t really get mad at him even though I find him an absolute abomination. He has no trouble falling asleep because he knows how stupid the American voter is.
