I do not know the outcome of the several primary elections going on in seven states yet.
There are primaries for senator, congressman, governor and statewide races for attorney general, comptroller, etc. But the eyes of anyone who is truly interested will be on the congressional races.
Now those of you who have followed my career know all too well that “ at heart I am a pessimist.” I put that sentence in quotes because they were the words that changed my life and probably did more damage to my professional future than anything else.
Perhaps if I ever get off my lazy veranda to write that book, you will get the inside story on what happened in the radio industry and to me in April of 1996.
But to get back on track, let me tell you what prompted me to remember that tragic day 14 years ago.
It is that I fear the zealots in the tea party gang will cause the Republicans most likely to defeat a Democrat opponent to lose his position on the ballot, preventing the Republicans from getting enough seats in the Senate and even the House to take back the Congress from Barack Obama’s thugs.
In Delaware, we have a classic example of what I mean. True, Representative Mike Castle is a moderate, but he is a Republican, and will vote to replace Harry Reid as Majority Leader. Castle will also vote for Minority Leader and Senator Mitch McConnell. Is that so hard for anybody to understand?
If you truly want to take back the Congress you get involved with a litmus test that eliminates the candidate most likely to beat the Democrat.
But I fear that the people backing the candidate created by the Tea Party Express will hand the Democrats a victory they really didn’t expect nor deserve.
But Republicans like me have had to suffer through this for as long as I can remember. I have no more patience for people who would rather see the ship sink than see it float if the crew isn’t entirely to their liking.
I hope that what I write now will cause you who read this web site to write me and tell me I am all wet!
I want to be wrong. I want the GOP to win in November, but the only way for that to happen is if the candidate most likely to beat the Dems is victorious today.
